The Exodus

The Exodus- (The story of Luc's family trying to escape the German army in 1940.) When the German army invaded Belgium in 1940 a large part of the Belgian population fled to France, leaving everything they had behind them. The mass movement of population that took place is what the Belgians call the Exodus. This is the story Luc's family Exodus.

Chapter 1 1939. Rumors of War......... page 1 to 3

Luc and his family are spending their vacation at La Panne, a seaside resort on the North Sea (see the map- front cover). At that time Luc was 8 years old

Chapter 2 1940. The First Days Of The War............. Page 4 to 7

The day the German Army entered into Belgium Luc was spending his vacation at La Panne. This time he is alone with his young aunt Elizabeth, hundreds of miles from his parents.

Chapter 3 Vanne................ Page 8 to 11

In this chapter Luc's family escapes into France. They seek refuge in a nun's convent located in a city called Vanne (see the map - front cover ).

Chapter 4 Larmor Baden. ..........page 12 to 17

After spending a few days in the convent they find a house in Larmor Baden, a small fishing port (see the map - front cover)

Chapter 5 Perigueux..........page 18 to 22

In Larmore Baden, the war front being far away, Luc and his family lead a simple and peaceful life until one night something happens that pushes them to move again more south to the city of Perigueux. The day following their arrival in Perigueux an unexpected danger forces them once more to run away.

Chapter 6 Capet..............page 23 to 37

This time they take refuge in the summer house of an old friend of the family not far from Saint Emilion, region famous for its vineyards. The property of their friend is called Capet Guilleux. It was so far away from any important center that they began to feel safer and started at last to lead a normal life in a real meridional paradise.

Chapter 7 Thinking of going back home................ page 38 to 42

After a few weeks of this peaceful life Luc's family started to make plans to return home. The German having won this first part of the war it became safe to go back. Luc and Agnes are hearing good news from their father.
